Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals using these drugs should be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through dieting usually see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Experts believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
People who have come off the jabs report a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
